She's a vixen with a shoe fetish.

A female fox has been identified as the perpetrator of a year-long shoe-stealing scheme in the idyllic town of Föhren in the hills of western Germany. For months, residents had been noticing that their slippers, boots, and sneakers were mysteriously disappearing from their doorsteps and back porches.

The case was cracked when a forestry worker stumbled upon an astonishing scene in the woods: dozens of shoes lay strewn on the forest floor surrounding a fox's den. Even more were discovered inside!

"We found 86 shoes in the den and a further 32 in a nearby quarry where they like to play," a local count, Rudolf Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt, tells SPIEGEL ONLINE, referring to the foxy mama and her cubs. "That includes 12 or 13 matching pairs of shoes."

Tiny little teeth marks on the shoelaces leads the Count to theorize that the vixen had been stealing the footwear for her cubs to play with. That, or she "simply likes collecting shoes," say the locals. And, really, who could fault a female for liking shoes?

In a scene sounding like something out of "Sound of Music," Count von Kesselstatt ordered the shoes to be rounded up and laid out on the palace grounds for the local townsfolk to look over and retrieve their missing shoes.

Has the shoe-stealing vixen corrected her ways since being discovered?

Not a chance. "More shoes have gone missing in the last few days," reports the Count.

Could this fox's name be Imelda?
Did she show preference for size 8 1/2s?

I live very near to a state park. the foxes are so tame that they no longer fear man as a threat. People have put them in danger bay feeding and petting them. DIMWITS!!!!!

let the fox have the shoes. You would think the people would keep thiers shoes inside after the first shoe was gone. So give the shoes back the the fox ok.

My thoughts exactly

Pyroraptor0001#9 Pyroraptor00016-20-2009 @ 4:24PM

Yeah really who would want them back after they have been in a fox's den anyway. Its not like they're ipods (that were in cases so they're not scratched up) or something really expensive.

LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THATS MAD FUNNY . THATS A COOL FOX

I think this fox is smarter than the average fox. Who would have thought a fox would go after shoes to pacify her cubs. I think it is cute. Leave the shoes where they lay. People, if you do not want more shoes snatched, leave them in a place where she can not get to them.

That is so cute! My ferret Napoleon does the same thing....he doesnt care whos shoes hes stealing but he seems partial to guests...its funny...and annoying....lol

darkstrawbery#13 darkstrawbery6-18-2009 @ 4:17PM

Let the poor thing keep the shoes. Its obv. she and her pups like them. I mean honestly, would you want your shoes back after a fox and her babies have played, bitten, and probably used the bathroom on or around them? Can we say health hazard?+

I love stories like this. She just wanted some "treasures". Did you ever hear about or see the seagul who stole Doritos? Animals are such a wonderful thing.

Redroses941#16 Redroses9416-18-2009 @ 4:32PM

This is a cute story,, it seems the fox just like shoes for some reason. Maybe she thinks it would be a good place for babies to fit in?

Diane#17 Diane6-18-2009 @ 4:51PM

Now that's hysterical. I love it. A true mom risking her life in the "big" city to make sure her little ones are happy. LOL.
Our new Great Pyreneese puppy when we got her had a shoe fetish too. She ate and entire tennis shoe. And when she pooped out the tongue of the shoe and the vet said "her anis is so raw" I almost died laughing when my husband yelled at him saying"well yours would be too if you sh-t out a tennis shoe tongue doc." Now we keep our shoes in the closet and if one forgets it's like panic city as we all run for the shoes left out.

My father has a dog that when she gets excited she goes into our mudroom and takes a shoe and prances aroud the house with it until someone asks for the shoe back. If no one see her she will eventuatlly drop the shoe some where and forgets about it. Its only frustrating when she nabs both shes and hide them some where in the house when you get to go somewhere.
